Bread for the Journey'/>
Fasting or Feasting? Bread for the Journey

Have you ever read a story or maybe watched a movie that sticks with you for a long, long time? Then maybe at some point you decide to re-read it or watch the movie all over again for a second or third or fourth time of pleasure? Well, that’s what I did, but as I read this time something I overlooked before illuminated in a delightful way. Want to know what it was? I read 1 Samuel 10:1-9, but here’s what happened leading up to it:

Saul had been wandering through the land looking for his father’s lost donkeys. The provisions he started out with were now gone. His search left him empty handed, both for lack of life sustaining bread and his search for the donkeys was unsuccessful. The servant traveling with him suggested they seek answers from a man of God who resided nearby. Interestingly, Saul found much more than he expected when he was anointed to be king over the people. The man of God, Samuel, told Saul what would happen as he left. Here’s the part I read that seemed to burst with new meaning:

They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you will accept from them … The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person. 1 Samuel 10:4, 6 NIV

Bread represents life, a life sustaining staple. Physically our bodies must be sustained with bread or food. So, too, must our mind, motivation and most inner being find bread for nourishment. Consider this:

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4 NIV

Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Sir,” they said, “from now on give us this bread.” Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty…” John 6:32-35 NIV

Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever.” –Jesus John 6:57-58 NIV

Notice a theme yet? We can eat bread for our physical body which will eventually fade away and die. But what about our inner man, deep down inside where excitement, happiness and pleasure either dwindle or thrive? Deep in our soul is where Jesus wants to reach us and fill us with life. Reading about him and choosing to live by his words found in the Holy Bible is like bread to satisfy our souls.

So what does this have to do with Saul accepting bread that was offered on his journey? Simply this, as you journey through this life, bread for your soul is offered along the way. Will you accept it? Will you accept Jesus, taking His word, reading and devouring it so your soul will be sustained, nourished and flourish? The choice is yours.

If you do not know Jesus, start reading about him in the Holy Bible beginning with the book of John. Romans 10:9 explains what you need to do. If you have known Him but traveled away, reacquaint yourself with Him. His word offers fresh bread for weary sou
ls. Will you accept His invitation to dine?

Many Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene

http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/images/view_photog.php?photogid=3116

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tanjadufrene.blogspot.com/2011/11/fasting-or-feasting-bread-for-journey.html' title='Fasting or Feasting? What conclusion did you reach? Read Genesis 16 again as a refresher …Then here are some thoughts to consider …

Interestingly, the verses between Abram’s indifference until his agreement with Hagar show us only how God reach to Hagar and her response to Him. But, before we look into that, let’s review the events that led up to it.

Hagar was a slave who was wed to her master and forced to carry his child. When she realized she carried a child and her mistress, Sarai, could not, she despised or dishonored Sarai. Sarai blamed Abram who indifferently returned Hagar to Sarai again as a slave. Sarai retaliated by abusing Hagar. Hagar ran away where the Lord’s angel found her and told her to return. Up to this point what we read of Abram is that he agreed with Sarai and was indifferent to Hagar’s situation.

Now let’s briefly look at the interaction between Hagar and God’s angel in the desert. Notice during the encounter Hagar was asked where she came from and where she was going. Her response only answers half of the question that she is running away from her mistress. She is told to return and then given a promise of numerous descendants and a son in her womb. Hagar was encouraged when she realized God saw her. Can’t you just hear her saying to herself, “Yes, God sees me! He knows all the wrong I have suffered! I am no longer alone!”? Upon her return, Hagar’s submission to Sarai was ultimately her submission or obedience to God who saw her and told her to return.

So, again, what moved Abram to agreement? Hagar first obeyed God by returning and submitting to her mistress, Sarai. Only after the birth of the baby do we see Abram take action in agreement with Hagar, naming the baby Ishmael, the name God told her to use. Her obedience to God led to blessing – the birth of a son, the agreement of Abram when naming the baby and she knew without doubt that God sees her, knows her situation. She is no longer alone, no longer without one to care for her.

Hagar did not have the benefit of studying God’s written Word as we do. Yet she enjoyed the benefit of his blessing when she obeyed His voice. What benefits will you enjoy? Will you read His Word and allow it to grow in your thoughts and heart? Will you listen for His voice and obey your conscience as He speaks to you? The choice is yours alone. Will you obey Him, submit to His instructions and experience His blessings?

I’d love to celebrate with you as you find His blessings on the other side of obedience! Feel free to write and tell me about where he leads you! But, most of all, give Him the glory!

Many Blessings …
Tanja

“I want a real meal, mama,” she said. Though the pitch of her tiny little voice indicated the youth of her years, her words almost declared a command. Taken by surprise, I proceeded to carry on a conversation with her, inquiring just what a ‘real meal’ might include. I wish I could remember her response, but I simply don’t. Yet after all these years I can still hear her voice desiring, no rather insisting, that she be fed well so her appetite would be satisfied and her body would grow. Not claiming to be a gourmet cook, I at least attempted to serve a balanced meal including vegetables, milk, meat, and bread. Yet, this little tot wanted more …

Her words returned to my mind as I pondered these verses:

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity …

Hebrews 5:12-14, 6:1a NIV

The Spirit clearly says that in the later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

1 Timothy 4:1-2 NIV

You’re going to find that there will be times where people will have not stomach for solid teaching, but will fill up on spiritual junk food—catchy opinions that tickle their fancy. They’ll turn their backs on truth and chase mirages. But you—keep your eye on what you’re doing , accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God’s servant.

2 Timothy 4:3-5 the Message

What does your stomach crave? Is your spirit satisfied with smooth words that are easy to hear, like spiritual junk food? Or do you want more, like the child wanting a ‘real meal’? Maybe you desire a ribeye steak, or plate full of lasagna, or cashew chicken, or whatever your favorite meal—an entrée full of flavor and something you can sink your teeth into! Do you crave the spiritual meat of God’s Word, a word that challenges you to grow and mature, something you can think on and put into practice in your life? Notice what Jesus had to say about this:

“These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.
“But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards.”
When Jesus concluded his address, the crowd burst into applause. They had never heard teaching like this. It was apparent that he was living everything he was saying—quite a contrast to their religion teachers! This was the best teaching they had ever heard.

Matthew 7:24-29 The Message

So what will you do? Will you feed your mind and spirit on God’s Word, delighting in the feast He desires to spread before you? Maybe you want this but do not know how or what to do. Here’s a simple suggestion: As you read the Bible each day, search for a verse that you can continue to think about. Then look for ways to act on that verse, putting it into practice. For example, Proverbs 15:1-3 (NIV) says ‘A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.’ Make a conscious effort to remember this verse and when you find you’re in the middle of a heated situation, choose to give a gentle answer. Take note of the results. What an adventure you’ll find as God’s Word becomes alive! (For the word of God is full of living power … Hebrews 4:11 NLT)

Like climbing stairs, one day rises to another and you will find yourself learning the Word, practicing what you’re learning and drawing closer to God. Enjoy the feast fit for a king as your soul thrives!

So what kind of ‘real meal’ will you enjoy today? I’d love to hear about it …

Many Blessings …
Tanja

P.S. Do you want more? Here’s some extra reading to help you ‘dig in’ …

1 Peter 2:2-3
Ephesians 4:1-16
1 Corinthians 3-4:5

Real Meal © 2011 Tanja Dufrene

http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/images/view_photog.php?photogid=2365

Justice ...

<img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NuTWfmOMwT0/TjDWGIupOPI/AAAAAAAAACI/kngQdwu0KhE/s320/18499d9fca6tjyb.jpg" t$="true" width="320" />The movie began with scenes typical of an old western town. The narrator described one night that changed the course of her life, telling of a drifter’s well aimed bullet that left her dad’s body motionless. Then he hurriedly ran away, stealing her dad’s horse. Disgust and reproach could be heard in her voice as she told how he could have just as easily walked away since no one in the town would have stood against Him.

Can you imagine such injustice? How could so many witnesses remain motionless, silent in the shadows? It’s the age old drama of how too many people are afraid, filled with shock, or are simply unwilling to take action. After all, isn’t that what great movies are made of, a conflict where no one will step up when suddenly the main character emerges, willing to set right the wrong that has been suffered? But, is that really how it is supposed to be? What is the responsibility of those who silently observed?

I was reminded of this movie when considering the words the Holy Spirit illuminated to me about Genesis 1:16-17:

"The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden as its gardener, to tend and care for it. But the Lord God gave the man this warning: “You may eat any fruit in the garden except fruit from the Tree of Conscience—for its fruit will open your eyes to make you aware of right and wrong, good and bad. If you eat its fruit, you will be doomed to die."

The Living Bible

"For its fruit will open your eyes’"… As I pondered these words, it was as though the Holy Spirit stood behind me and spoke: ‘Ever since the eyes of man were opened to evil, man has tried to shut them again.’

It did not take long for many injustices to come to mind, especially the genocide of approximately 6 million European Jews, known as the Holocaust. How many people willingly closed their eyes, unwilling to admit or stand against the evil that unfolded? And what about the many injustices experienced since then? Are there any who will assume the responsibility of opened eyes, taking a right stand? Who will stand for what is right? And who will rightly stand, properly handling the weapons available to us?

"And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.

Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an in dispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out."

Ephesians 6:10-18 The Message

"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete."

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 NIV

Do you know what weapons are available to you? Are you well trained, able to use them for the Lord’s glory? And as situations demand decisions, how will you respond?

Will you hide in the shadows, closing your eyes, refusing responsibility?
See 2 Timothy 1:7; Joshua 1:9; Deuteronomy 31:6-7; Luke 10:19.

Will you exact revenge and thus ineffectively spend your fighting energies?
See 1 Peter 3:8-17; Romans 12:17-21.

Will you charge into battle unarmed?
See Ephesians 6:10-19; 2 Timothy 2:15.

Or will you prevail, having trained well for the battle, wielding the Word of God against all evil?

"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account."

Hebrews 4:12-13 NIV

I mentioned the opening of a movie where a town was riddled by an unscrupulous man. In the story one young woman prevailed against her enemy. But, life is not really like the movies is it? Too many times the happy ending of a movie is short lived and not even close to the reality we face – right? Yet, God’s Word never fails:

"The Lord gives righteousness and justice to all who are treated unfairly." Psalm 103:6 NLT

What will you do? protector, patient, provider …

Life synopsis … Joseph was working toward his goal to be married when his fiancées
purity was unexpectedly compromised. He could have easily thought Mary was sabotaging his efforts. Yet, being a righteous man, he wanted to protect her reputation. When he thought she had been unfaithful to him, he planned to quietly end the relationship. God’s plan prevailed when Joseph willingly responded to a divine dream. He put his own reputation at risk, married Mary, and then patiently waited to consummate the marriage while providing for her and a baby not his own.

Read this ... Matthew 1:18-25, Matthew 2:13-15; Matthew 2:19-23; 2 Timothy 2:15

Key verses … When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him …

Coffee Break Study – The Five Women of Genealogy © 2011 Tanja Dufrene

Matthew 1:24 NIV
Words are not mere words, you know. Reaching my haven hideout I promptly pulled the stool close to the table filled with tiny pieces of brightly colored cardboard. It’s only a corner in the vast room, but it is my little get away.

The box before me displayed brilliant hews of the rainbow in just the right balance to create a scene with a rustic cabin, flowing water and a sense of outdoor ecstasy. Gazing into this alluring scene it was as though I could hear the crickets, the rustling of leaves and the stream flowing. The artist certainly captured a sense of serenity with his talented strokes of color.

Straightening for a moment I realized this quiet little place had become one of my favorites. As I sat there sifting through the many puzzle pieces seeking just the right fit, my mind and spirit called to the Master of my soul. On this night as I began to “puzzle” again, His words returned to my mind:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me---watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.
Matthew 11:28-30 The Message

I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you … the words echoed in my mind. I have often found puzzle pieces that look as though they belong but upon attempting, it just does not quite fit. All too often one little edge feels forced. I have also seen some that appeared to be the same shape, yet the pattern did not match where I was about to connect it. For the puzzle to display the artists’ intended work, each piece must fit together in a precise order. Certainly some pieces could be forced to fit, but the original intent would be lost.

So, too, it is with our lives. The Master who created us longs to fit each piece together, creating something of value and beauty. Yet how often do we force things because it is what we want? Then what of the original design of our lives? The Master Jesus knows exactly how each moment was intended.

Are we yielded to His leading, even to the point of allowing Him to undo portions perhaps forced together in error? The process can be lengthy and difficult: “The way to life - to God! - is vigorous and requires total attention” (Matthew 7:14b The Message). But the result, much like a completed puzzle with each piece correctly placed, is simply a woven art of breathtaking beauty: “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD … to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes … They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.” (Isaiah 61:1-3 NIV 1984)

I hope you’ll join me in following Him, yielding to His leading. Do you recognize how He leads? Is His voice like a familiar friend calling you? I find reading His Word sharpens my spirit and tunes my ears to His voice and you, too, can experience the same … “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17 niv).

Don’t’ know where to start? Start reading the words of Jesus Christ, many of which are found in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) of the Holy Bible. After reading through these, I find practical instructions for daily life easy to understand in Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians. As pieces come together for you, I’d love to hear about your journey. This week I'll provide an introduction and we'll get started in full swing next week!

As a young girl, I was challenged to read the Bible so I could color in the bubbles of a simple reading plan. I must admit, my childlike motive was not spiritual. Yet God in His grace reached out to me making the Words I read come ALIVE! As I read chapter after chapter, hope, pleasure and ideas of how to practice the words began to form in my mind. Life events began to unfold, revealing the validity of what I had read --- it almost seemed like a book of magic to my young little mind! Intrigue began to spark enthusiasm as I entered this journey of reading, pondering, praying, living and experiencing the Word! Since then the passion within me ignited to see you also share in this amazing experience!

This study is designed specifically to encourage reading the Bible with one main thought for personal reflection and application. It is also designed specifically for women who desire to draw closer to God, yet find time limited because of responsibilities.

Feel free to read additional passages, use various translations or refer to commentaries for deeper study. And, please do not forget to consider what you have read, asking the Holy Spirit to show you how to put it into practice – for your good, and His glory!

For this introductory week, simply read Matthew 1 as many times as you'd like, taking it slowly to discover details you may have previously missed! We'll begin our journey into the 5 Women of Geneaology next week!

Many Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene
PS Feel free to share comments regarding new insights you've gained ...

Coffee Break Study – The Five Women of Genealogy © 2011 Tanja Dufrene

“I know the Master of the wind. I know the Maker of the rain. He can calm the storm, cause the sun to shine again …”1 Do you remember that old church song? The words began to play in my mind this morning in the aftermath of yesterday’s storms. Looking out my window today the grass is green, the sun is shining and a tree across the street sways to the light wind that is blowing. Other than the memory and physical tiredness from the tension, there is little left of the previously looming threats, at least from my vantage point.

But others only a few miles from me were faced with total devastation. Numerous pictures of damaged homes and buildings flashed across the television screen for hours last night. The news web pages are filled with videos and photos of the destruction. Piles of lumber and debris have become the new landscape for many. It is almost more than my mind and emotions can comprehend.
As I sit here and reflect, I realize indeed, the Master of the wind, the Maker of the rain sustained us. We were unharmed and our property undamaged. Yet how many were not as fortunate, and why? And how are we to respond? As I prayerfully considered this, I was reminded of Job’s response when he faced great calamity: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” Job 1:21 NIV
Facing catastrophic loss, Job still honored the Lord. There was no blame, no pity party, and seemingly, no anger. Instead, he praised God. Looking into the original word definition, it indicates Job “blessed” or “adored” God.2 Can we bless God even after such tragedy? Or perhaps more appropriately asked, will we choose to adore God? Our opinion of Him or events He allows to unfold does not change who He is. But our response to Him can change who we are and how we handle life’s storms.
Were you affected by the recent storms? Do you know someone who sustained damage or was injured? The Maker of the wind and rain waits for us to be His hands reaching to those in need.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:34-40 NIV
May we find ways to share needed resources, as well as words of encouragement and hope, to help those in need.

Many Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene

1 Recorded by The Hemphills on Together Copyright @ 1984 Heartwarming Records
2 Strong’s Greek and Hebrew Dictionary (based on the King James version of the Holy Bible)

Storm © 2011 Tanja Dufrene

He Cried ...

He cried, “Master, save me!”
Jesus didn’t hesitate. Said to yourself lately, “I just can’t take it anymore!” What do you do in those moments? To whom do you cry?

Three simple words changed Peter’s future – “Master, save me!” First, he surrendered, acknowledging Jesus as “Master”. Then he presented his need – “save me.” “Immediately [without hesitation] Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.”
Matthew 14:31a NIV

What an easy example to follow – choose Jesus as Master (ruler, governor, director of your life) and then present your need. Since Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8), be encouraged in realizing He longs to be gracious to you …
Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!
Isaiah 30:18 NIV

What will you do with those powerful three little words? “Master, save me!”
Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.
Philippians 4:6-7 The Message

More encouragement and instructions can be found in the Holy Bible. Start with the RED letters … the words Jesus spoke, many of which can be found in the first four books of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). As you read with an open heart, prayerfully ask, “God, what would you say to me? What would you have me do with this?” You’ll find a completely new life opening up to you!

I’d love to hear about your journey … leave a comment, post on my facebook page, or send me an email: Tanja_Dufrene@yahoo.com

Many blessings …
Tanja Dufrene

He Cried © 2011 Tanja Dufrene

Rope ... How easily will you be entangled?

… How in the world do you think it’s possible in broad daylight to enter the house of an awake, able-bodied man and walk off with his possessions unless you tie him up first? Tie him up, though, and you can clean him out.
Matthew 12:22-29 The Message

As I read this passage a few things occurred to me ... take a look at some of the key words:

Broad daylight = nothing hidden / open before the Lord-a Christ follower
Enter the house = invited in, not a break in, possibly weak boundaries
Awake, able bodied = alert and capable
Walk off with = no resistance
Tie him up = distract, bind, confuse
Clean him out = empty, desolate

What thoughts or actions does satan present to you? Ever thought of these things like a rope he’s handing you so you’ll get all tied up? Then when you’re tangled, he can just walk in and remove your treasures. Treasures such as peace, wisdom, strength, that intimate connection you once felt with the lover of your soul …

So what’s your rope?
- fear of the future?
- financial irresponsibility?
- failing health?
- family discord?
- failed intimacy or friendships?

What tangles your emotions, confuses your mind or consumes your time? Do you hold your hands out, willingly accepting the rope satan wants to hand you only to later realize you were distracted, confused and allowed the treasures within you to be emptied?

CONCLUSION:
So what’s the remedy? Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

Guard your heart, huh? Doesn’t sound too difficult … but, how do we do that?

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) gives specific instructions:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by 2prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, 1present your requests to God. And 3the peace of God, which transcends all understanding; will 4guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

So what action are we supposed to take?
What? 1present requests to God
How? 2by prayer and petition with thanksgiving

What is the result we can expect?
What? 3the peace of God
4a guarded heart

Just as we have walls around the place where we live to protect the life we enjoy inside, so we must protect our inner selves, the heart, which is the wellspring of life. I hope you’ll begin to recognize the rope satan has used to bind you then take a firm stand, refusing to accept it any more!

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32 (NIV)

More of Jesus’ truth can be found in the Holy Bible. Job stress, strained relationships and health concerns were taking a toll on my peace of mind. Even in these moments of inspiration I found myself traveling again because of yet another crisis. When would the calm return to my life I wondered.

The days had been icy cold and overcast, matching the mood brewing in my mind. I was not excited about the need to be on the road again, but at least the sun shone through the windshield and warmed my face. Grasping for something good, I turned the corner in my mind and determined to thank the Lord for the refreshing warmth.

Before long I reached my favorite spot along this route which was becoming more and more familiar to me. It was especially enchanting when I did not have to drive through this stretch of road but instead could peer out the window, drinking in the natural beauty. But today, I would have to settle for little snatches of eye ecstasy.

I was feeling weary worn and restless, begging for relief, yet as the hills began to grow all around me, I marveled at their majesty. They were strong, sturdy and massive. In days past I would have feel tiny and perhaps vulnerable in comparison to these. Yet today, I suddenly felt hugged, as though God were wrapping me in a fortress. The mental and emotional release was exhilarating as I recalled His promise...

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people both now and forevermore. Psalm 125:2 NIV

No longer was I facing the heaviness that weighed in my mind on my own. I was no longer alone. The burdens of this life had not diminished but in that moment of realization, I was encouraged. God, who created these awesome ripples across the land, so gently reminded me that His protection surrounds me. I would not be swallowed up or overcome by it all.

What about you … what challenges has life put before you? Where do you go for help? Are you hiding God’s Word in your heart so that His Spirit can remind you of it when you need it most? That’s what happened the day I was driving to yet another of life’s unexpected events. His promptings are available to all who are willing (see John 3:16) …

For God does not show favoritism. Romans 2:11 NIV

Or perhaps life is going well for you, life is good. Do you have more than enough? Are you sharing with others? Did you know that is the very reason you have been blessed with more than you need … to helps others along the way?

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2 NIV

Whether you are struggling to take the next step or bouncing with enthusiasm, God wants to meet you where you are, drawing you into intimacy with Him. I hope you’ll join me there and find the essence of life! I’d love to hear about the moments you share with Him as He takes your breath away! Send me an email sometime!

Many Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Highpointe Church OKC

What will be revealed?

I was covered from head to toe with hat, scarf, gloves, long coat, knee socks, pants and layers and layers and layers. Ok, well, maybe not so much, but you get the idea, right? I dressed as warmly as I knew how, yet the biting cold of the morning air prevailed. Initially I walked with my hands to my side, yet after several minutes my fingers began to numb. Realizing we still had quite a distance to go, I balled my hands into fists, hoping to create warmth and avoid frostbite. When even those measures proved to be insufficient, I shoved my hands into my pockets.

They said this was the first snow of the season. Several of us mused at how people could manage such harsh weather each winter. Our pace was moderately fast considering the size of our group. I was thankful not to be walking this route alone, though how could I have possibly been alone with so many others also walking to their destination.

I purposefully looked into the faces of many passersby. Each appeared intent on only one thing, to reach a specific place where warmth and the day’s tasks would be found. One particular man mirrored my approach to this challenge – every possible inch of skin was covered save the eyes needed for sight. Any why not? The air was so cold and the wind only exacerbated our discomfort.

Yet we continued walked. First one intersection, then another, and another … Fortunately, we had to stop at only a few crossings as the pedestrian light illuminated, signaling that motorized traffic would soon fill the street, making our passage unsafe.

As our journey continued I could not stop thinking about the man who only exposed his eyes to these elements. Future recognition of him would be very difficult because he revealed so little. Within moments my mind drifted to these words …

I have hidden Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11 NLT

So how does hiding God’s Word in my heart relate to a man walking the streets on a cold Chicago morning? Simply this, as I passed him, little of who he is could be seen. Yet when he arrives in a warm place, he will begin to unwrap the outer covering. Who he is will be revealed. Just like us, when faced with life situations, our outer veneer will fade. Whatever we are under the outer cloak will be evident.

What will be discovered about me and you when our external wrapping is removed? What do you think about? Do you feed your mind with that which is good so there is a reserve readily available when it’s needed?

Each time you unwrap, removing your coat, gloves, hat or whatever during this winter season, I hope you’ll think of this little reminder and consider, “Am I hiding God’s Word in my heart so that His likeness is revealed in me when the hidden me is exposed?”

Many Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Highpointe Church
Oklahoma City, OK

Happiness ...

Have you ever thought about just how much time is spent in an automobile? That’s not something that often crosses my mind, yet, here I was again, traveling down the road for an extended period of time when my otherwise non-eventful frame of mind was interrupted …

“Happiness for $1” the billboard sign read. Hum, happiness, I thought. I remember asking someone several years ago what they wanted out of life. The answer was forthcoming with only a slight delay, clearly articulate and simply this: “I just want to be happy.”

Happy or happiness, just how do we find this elusive state of being anyway? As we continued to pass one mile marker, then another, and another along the way I continued to ponder the advertisement. The bright red background was an attention getter. And the extra large glasses of Coca-Cola and Iced Tea looked refreshing and desirable. The promise that happiness could be found in these exhilarating beverages was clearly the message. Yet could a mere liquid truly provide such satisfaction?

Happiness, I continued to ponder. Some words that are synonymous with happiness include contentment, enchantment, exuberance, and jubilation. I’ve heard it said that true happiness is: 1) having something to do, 2) having something for which to look forward, and 3) having someone with which to share it all. Searching further I found that one dictionary records happiness as a state of well-being. Again, I wondered, how can we attain this desirable state?

As the miles passed these thoughts simply would not leave me. Finally, I began to call out to the God who created me, searching for His answer and greater clarification. In His ever tender way, He reminded me of His Word:

Happy are all who perfectly follow the laws of God. Happy are all who search for God, and always do His will, rejecting compromise with evil and walk only in His paths.
Psalm 119:2-3 LvB

Ah, yes! It is indeed possible to be happy, to find a state of well-being. It’s all about following the laws of God! And speaking of laws, in a mere few hours, we will be presented again with the privilege and responsibility of voting. Will you review the choices before us, comparing them to God’s laws, seeking and voting for that which most closely aligns with His Word? His promise of peace is clear:

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone --- for kings (or in our culture, presidents) and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
1 Timothy 2:1-4 niv

By the way, a sample ballot can be viewed at Vote-OK.org. I hope we will all consider prayerfully the votes soon to be cast.

Many Blessings ….
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Highpointe Church OKC

What she is doing ...

“Daddy, what she is doing?” The words caught my attention as the little girl queried her father for an explanation. She was observing me. What was I doing, anyway? I wondered why her father did not seize the moment and correct her words. She was just learning to form sentences. While her tiny voice was so precious and cute, her ability to communicate with the world around her could be hindered if she failed to learn good grammar, I pondered. I was listening for his instruction to be something like, “Honey, say, ‘What is she doing, not what she is doing?’”

I later learned that although her words were spoken in English, the French culture in which she grew influenced her word pattern. French word order is similar to English with Subject Verb and Object, except when a pronoun is used, in which the correct word order becomes Subject Object Verb. Thus, “what she is doing” seemed appropriate.

Well, so much for the quick language lesson. Let’s get back to the point, which is really about the doing. What is it that I was doing? I simply cannot recall but her words never left my memory: what she is doing? Clearly God is concerned with the things we choose to do. His Word tells us we will be judged according to our doing:

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.
Revelation 20:12 NIV

You know me by now; I began to think deeper, asking: ‘Well then, just what is it that we are supposed to be doing?’ Then I marvel at how gracious God is when He provides the answer:

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says … the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continued to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it --- he will be blessed in what he does.
James 1:22, 25 NIV (emphasis added)

Do not merely listen to the word … Do what it says … Shall we go deeper? How will we know what it says unless we read it, or hear it, or are exposed to it in some way? Do we read God’s Word regularly so that we know what it says and can thus, do what it says? Do we regularly attend teachings at His house where He has called others to explain the Word to us? Do we listen on the radio or television, or CDs, or DVDs, or any other media form so that we continue to learn what He would have us do?

The little girl’s words were imprinted on my heart even though the moment was more than 20 years ago. A little tot was watching me, wondering about my actions. Her father never addressed the word order with which she spoke, yet my doing in that moment became paramount.

So … What are you doing? What will you do today, tomorrow, in the days to come? Will you be found as a hearer and doer of the Word? Will you discipline yourself to read and study it so when your doing is observed there is no question if it is in line with God’s Word?

Well, I’ve got some studying to do. I must read the Word so it will be fresh on my mind and in my heart. I want to be found doing the Word and continually learning more of it. I hope you’ll join me … and share with me the exciting things you discover there … send me an email or leave a note on my blog: tanjadufrene@blogspot.com

Many Blessings,
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Highpointe Church OKC

Travel

Well, it happened again … you know, that seemingly uneventful drive along a well known route when all of the sudden something that’s always been there takes on a new meaning …

On this particular evening I drove down a familiar road and began to notice the great workmanship before me. The four lanes were wide such that many travelers could pass simultaneously. The road striping was visibly fresh. The curbs were unbroken and uniform. Street lights strategically placed at consistent increments illuminated, affording safe night time navigation. The flat terrain contributed nicely to the solid foundation upon which I drove, allowing me to see the long smooth course before me. As I looked straight ahead, peering into the distance, these words returned to me:

Stay always within the boundaries where God’s love can reach and bless you.
June 21 The Living Bible

Stay always within the boundaries … suddenly the curbs represented more to me than a nice edging to distinguish between the road and field stretched beside it. These were boundaries, limits within which the vehicles would find the best passage.

In light of the road before me, it seemed silly that anyone might consider leaving the pavement to travel on the unimproved grassy banks. While the powerful machines we drive could certainly tackle such feats, the ride would be bumpy, difficult and likely result in unnecessary wear and tear. Such a decision would clearly be unwise.

Yet I pondered: How often do we choose a path along life’s way quite unimproved from that which our Savior has prepared for us? He promised us the Holy Spirit would guide us, though do we heed His still small voice? Although we have all sinned and fallen short of His glory (Romans 3:23), we can decide even now that our highest priority is to respond obediently when He speaks. Life will take on new meaning and our travels will be met with greater ease as we move in the direction He intended for us. Consider this:

Yet the Lord pleads with you still: Ask where the good road is, the godly paths you used to walk in, in the days of long ago. Travel there, and you will find rest for your souls.
Jeremiah 6:16a The Living Bible

I safely reached my destination that evening. And in the days that followed I traveled that same road many times. Yet with each passing I examine again the choices I make and remember His kind voice that whispered to my soul: Stay within the boundaries …

So how has your journey been lately? Are you eagerly looking for His signs along the way? Are you expectantly waiting for His voice and leading, excited about another opportunity to respond in obedience? I’d love to hear about your travels … post a note so others, too, can be encouraged!

Many Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Highpointe Church

Feast or Famine?

“You are borderline anemic.” I can still hear the doctor’s words after all these years. The results of the checkup surprised me. I found myself full of questions: What is anemia? What are its effects? How is it corrected? And so forth. Thankfully this is no longer an issue for me; subsequent tests never yielded the same results.

Yet because of his words to me, I began to research and learned that anemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells provide oxygen to body tissues and cells depend on oxygen for survival. Symptoms include fatigue and weakness and since this condition tends to develop slowly, adaptation occurs. It often goes unrecognized for some time. As you can see, anemia is not a health condition to be ignored. Simply stated, something was missing that could affect everything else!

As I reflected back on that memory, I thought of Christ and the rich blood He shed for us. He knew we need a relationship with our Father, the God who created us, and that His blood would bridge the gap our sin created. Many who read this have already accepted Jesus Christ as personal Savior, the One who restores our relationship with the Father But, is there something missing --- something seemingly tiny and unseen that affects everything much like red blood cells? Have you ever thought about what provides oxygen to your spiritual blood?

Here’s what Paul wrote to Timothy:

There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another---showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.
2 Timothy 3:15-17 The Message

In essence our spiritual blood becomes full of oxygen Through the Word so we are in shape to complete the tasks God has for us.

The doctor’s findings at that time resulted in corrective action for me. I put into practice his recommendations and have met with success. My body is healthy and functions well now. Just as my body was deficient of iron yet corrective action restored health, so our spirits find health in the Word (The Holy Bible).

So, how’s your red blood count spiritually? Do you feast on His Word daily? Or is your spiritual blood anemic, taking in His Word only occasionally? What corrections do you need to make to restore health? Are you reading the Word on a regular basis, considering its message and putting it into practice? I vividly remember when the importance of daily reading His Word occurred to me. I was a young adult. Taking that daily dose has made all the difference.

I’d love to hear about what the Spirit whispers to your soul as you feast on the Word! You know, those silent moments before the world starts moving with the demands of schedules and responsibilities. Straying from my usual routine this particular morning, I wandered over to the windows, opened the blinds and gazed into the courtyard. The restful peace of the morning had not yet lifted. The sun had not pierced the sky with its brilliant rays. Only the night lamp near the sidewalk illuminated the tranquil scene before me.

Peering through the window I could see the grassy area, trees and other landscaping. Not far from my view were the front doors and windows of other occupants. Each window pane was dark as though no one had yet risen. I began to call out to my Creator, “What would you show me? Did You not call me over here?”

It occurred to me that many of my neighbors had moved on, no longer living in our complex. Few seem to use their front doors that open to the lovely courtyard I was enjoying. Would I even recognize them if our paths crossed along life’s way?

Then my mind drifted through the walls of these units. Each resident lives in a space similar to mine. Oh I’m sure there are different decorating tastes, various personal effects, yet the basic designs are comparable. I thought of how people move in and out with the passing of time, pursuing other life events. Yet the units remain. They are but empty space to be used by those who come and go.

Looking heavenward again, I realized we, too, are merely occupants on earth for a season. Our Creator placed us here for only a time. Yet what do we do with it? How are the imaginary walls of this world affected by our placement here? Is it a better place after we are gone because we were here? Do we merely focus on making it through another day? Or do we rejoice while seeking His design for the time and space He has provided? I saw myself in these words:

No doubt about it: God is good ---
good to good people, good to the good-hearted.
But I nearly missed it, missed seeing his goodness.
I was looking the other way …
Psalm 73:1-2 The Message

Looking again into the courtyard I saw lights beginning to illuminate the windows as others began to awaken. I realized all too soon that the day’s tasks were calling. It was time to get moving and work through the assignments set for me. And in His goodness, God shared His beautiful words to guide me:

Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90: 12 NIV

Hum … I wonder what mark He will have me leave on today … and I’d love to hear about how He leads you in the coming days...

Many Blessings,
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Highpointe Church - OKC

Alone ...

I’ve passed by it many times but never really noticed it – until now. There are several nearby, yet this one stands alone. Although it is somewhat smaller, this lovely holly bush is growing in soil much like that of the others. It does not appear to receive any more or less sunshine or water. Yet what caught my attention was that it was full, FULL of berries - quite unlike the others.

Have you ever felt like you’re standing alone? Or perhaps you’ve been through seasons of loneliness. I’ve heard it said you can feel all alone even when in a room crowded full of people. I’ve experienced that, have you? I think that’s why this one shrub caught my eye. Personally, I’ve never liked feeling alone though I’ve had many opportunities for just such. Yet as I observed the berries on this one bush, a new awakening dawned within me when I remembered this:

… he (Jesus) climbed the mountain so he could be by himself and pray. He stayed there alone, late into the night.
Matthew 14:23 The Message

Let’s take a closer look at Matthew 14. In the previous verses, we see that Jesus learned John the Baptist was beheaded. While on His way to a remote place the crowd followed Him. Notice what Jesus did … “he had compassion on them and healed their sick.” Then He performed a miracle to ensure their strength would not fail as they traveled home. He fed 5,000 men, not including the women and children, with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish!

In spite of His desire to be alone, perhaps to grieve John’s death or seek strength and direction from the Father, Jesus gave of Himself to the crowd that followed Him. He delayed His own desires. Finally, when the needs of the crowd were satisfied, He made time to seek God. He did not pursue rest or exhibit a sense of entitlement for having worked so hard. Instead, He climbed a mountain! Why? So He could be alone and pray.

Ok, so I’m writing about one bush that produces lots of berries as it stands alone. Then I’m noting that most of us have felt alone at some time or another. So what’s the point, right? Are you concerned that I’m going to say we should all be alone? Well, be at ease. That’s not the point at all. But this is … what do we do with those times when we’re alone? Or better yet, do we seek time to be alone with God?

If we follow the example of Jesus, we will make time to be alone with the One we worship. I hope you’ll read Matthew 14 from a fresh perspective. Ponder what Jesus did, how He gave of Himself tirelessly. And realize that even Jesus knew His ability to continue producing fruit for the kingdom was dependent on His alone time with God.

A single holly bush bursting with berries as it stands alone … hum … I wonder what fruit will be produced through our lives as we follow the example of Christ – both in selfless service and in prayerful time alone with the Father.

I’d love to hear about the new insights you’re gleaning in your time with the Lord …

Many Blessings,
Tanja Dufrene
Highpointe Church
Women’s Ministries

Measures

“You remember, don’t you?” she said. “They called us wiggle worms. If we were still during nap time we got a sticker. At the end of the week we were able to see all our stickers. If we got one for each day we could move to a new spot. If we didn’t get all our stickers for the week, we had to stay in the same spot.”

Listening to her share this fond memory warmed my heart, almost made me giggle, you know, the internal expression of wiggles. Such a simple treasure, a sticker on a chart, yet it was powerful enough to motivate little children to avoid moving about during nap time! And what a wonderful thought that the record started over with the beginning of each new week. Um … sounds something like this:

Count yourself lucky, how happy you must be --- you get a fresh start, your slate’s wiped clean. Count yourself lucky --- God holds nothing against you and you’re holding nothing back from him.
Psalm 32:1-2 The Message

For years people have set “New Year’s resolutions” only to be disappointed within a short time when those well intended commitments did not flourish. Yet, this year I hope you’ll approach it with a different thought, perhaps a new approach …

Do your best in the job you received from the Master. Do your very best.
Colossians 4:17 The Message

Go ahead, make note of your goals, possibly habits to which you want to adhere. Be careful not to overload yourself with too many. Typically focusing on one to three items can be quite manageable. Now, here’s the new idea:

Set yourself up with a tracker of some kind. It can be on your day planner, wall calendar, electronic calendar or merely a notepad. Each day that you “do your best” in working toward your goal, mark it in some meaningful way (a sticker, a “B” for best effort, “S” for success, or whatever). Next, determine time measurements, perhaps weekly or monthly. At the end of each time measurement, tally your successes and make note of them. As your measurements grow with the passing of days, compare them to the previous. This will break the year into smaller portions, providing you with a fresh start with the beginning of each new time measurement. It also allows you to rebuild momentum while making stride toward your goals.

Celebrate God’s goodness at the end of each day and time measurement while recognizing that it is He who provided the opportunities. What a wonderful life, one step at a time, will unfold before you as you put His Word into practice: Do your best … Do your very best! You’ve been given a fresh start with today and each new measurement!

… praying that you’ll stand firm, mature and confident in everything God wants you to do …
Colossians 4:12 The Message
I’d love to hear about your successes or share an encouraging word if you struggle. Leave a comment …

Happy New Year!

Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Highpointe Church - OKC

Traditions

“It’s the most -- wonderful time -- of the year …” Have you heard this song lately? I can hear the melody playing in my head with the jingle of bells and sense the wiggly giggly feeling it stirs. Along with that theme a familiar word eventually surfaces … Tradition.

Since my husband's roots are deep, deep in South Louisiana where Cajun food originated, one fine dish traditionally on our table during the holidays is gumbo! This soup like entree has created a few chuckles in our family through the years, especially when we had my sister-in-law absolutely convinced the brown liquid base of it was drawn directly from the muddy bayous. Fortunately for us, she did not lose her half eaten dinner, though it was a little uncertain there for a while!

A few years later we learned that sometimes traditions just do not work out. I don't have to tell you what it's like putting the puzzle pieces of a family together, especially during the Christmas season. But our family puzzle was quite interesting this particular year ...

As it happened, we were maintaining two households. My husband's job had relocated him out of state. My job frequently kept me traveling while our high school aged children were learning about life without daily parental involvement. Piecing together travel time, meal time, family time, expenses and on and on the list went, we found ourselves simply out of time to prepare Christmas dinner. Because of travel schedules, we had our Christmas dinner at a fast food Italian restaurant! Having carried a secret internal pressure to produce the prize pot of gumbo for each Christmas dinner, my husband apologized and hung his head.

To our surprise, this became one of our fondest Christmas memories. I marveled at the thought, considering the time and labor we invested through the years to prepare just the right meal. Yet what we really enjoyed was something different - simply all of us together celebrating Jesus, whose birth, death and resurrection paved the way for our relationship with God. And all of this over a non-traditional meal!

As I considered the memory, I thought about this:

Do not sore up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21 NIV

Um … where your treasure is, there you heart will be also. Only later did I realize our hearts simply were not in traditions. Instead our hearts were invested in one another and in celebrating Jesus.

Do you enjoy family traditions? Preceding the game two captains where chosen. Teams
were formed as the captains alternated calling one child over at a time.
Or maybe you remember a game of ball where teams were selected by the
captains as the others anxiously waited.

I remember the children enthusiastically bobbing up and down shouting with
excitement: “Pick me! Pick me!” I, too, stood there anticipating the
sound of my name being called. Listening intently, I hoped I would not be
the last one. Everyone seemed to desire the same thing – to be picked or
chosen, not left behind. Yet at the same time, everyone, save two team
captains, remained relatively powerless to affect the outcome.

Perhaps these kinds of games were not played when you were a child. Yet if
you take a moment to think about it, there have likely been times in your
life somewhere along the way where you waited, hoping to be chosen maybe
for acceptance by a particular group of people or for admittance into a
school, a desirable job or possibly a deserved promotion. Whatever the
circumstance, we all face moments of expectation waiting for someone’s
arbitrary decision. That time of helpless abandon can produce such
anxiety.

But, we’re no longer vulnerable, depending on someone else’s sense of
choice. God has already chosen us! As I read in Romans this morning I
discovered a key to melt away that sense of apprehension.

The chosen ones of God were those who let God pursue His interest in
them …
Romans 11:7 The Message

Yes, we’ve been chosen! Now what's left is for us to let God pursue His
interest in us. Thinking back on those childhood games, I also realized
the children being selected for teams usually ran with excitement as they
were called. Jesus told us His kingdom belongs to men whose hearts are
trusting like children:

“Let the little children come to me! Never send them away! For the
Kingdom of God belongs to men who have hearts as trusting as these
little children’s.”
Luke 18:16 The Living Bible

Will you excitedly run to join His team? Or will you continue running away
from His promptings? God has already chosen you; will you choose Him?
Will you allow Him to pursue His interest in and through you?

What victories have you experienced when heeding His nudges? I hope to
hear from you! His eyes were intense and wide. His little tear streaked cheeks were rosy red and plump. Missing his little sister he had just learned she was in the hospital. In words such a little one could understand, he had been told she was dry and needed fluid. She was dehydrated. His concern for her was touching as he earnestly replied, "But mommy, I don’t’ want her to dry up."

The scene replayed in my mind a few days ago as I considered people all around me because Jesus said: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink." (John 7:37 NIV) Fortunately, many have met Jesus, tasted of His goodness, and had a long, soul quenching drink. Yet is one drink enough? Is this merely a one time event or possibly an occasional visit? Our pastor stated it like this: "Are you walking with God, or do you just cross paths with him occasionally?"

How many people wander through each day oblivious to the need for continued connection with Christ? Connection with Him ensures a fluid flow of His Spirit. He also told us: "I am the bread of life." (John 6:48 NIV) and, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4 NIV).

Do you live on day old, possibly even week old bread? Or do you seek Him daily, feasting on fresh warm experiences of His presence? Are you hungry yet? Find the feast He has for you in His Word, savor it, and find the satisfaction for which your soul longs.

I’d love to hear about the fresh bread of life on which you have been feasting. I welcomed the opportunity to slip out of the house to run a quick errand, hoping this would help me transition from the busy work day into the evening’s activities. It had been a demanding day which left my mind whirling. As a result I navigated my route almost on auto pilot.

Suddenly, I looked around and took note of where I was as compared it to where I intended to be … I had taken the wrong turn! My mind immediately thrust forward in over drive searching for an alternate, yet quick remedy. Within a few moments a new route was established and I realized this was even better than my initial plan.

In that moment these words returned to me:
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.
Psalm 84:11 NIV

Ever faithful to His Word He caused me to establish a better route than I had originally intended to take. Not only did He provide the beauty of the setting sun to comfort me, He also ordered my steps, leading me just to where I needed to go.

Ok, so I’m sure that may be a little silly to some of you natives of this area. But for me, I’m still learning to navigate here. And I just revel in the goodness of the Lord, how He reveals Himself even in the minute details of life. I do hope your navigation ability is better than mine as you manage daily tasks, but I pray the Lord Jesus Christ is your ultimate GPS as you travel through life’s journey.

Where has He led you in His Word lately? I’d love to hear about it!

“… I want not only to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours: each of us will be a blessing to the other.”
Romans 12:1b the Message

Blessings ...
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Highpointe Church - OKC

No More Blame ...

I can still see her face vividly in my mind. Her skin looked soft though years of experience left faint lines. Her short black hair was thick and moved freely. Her voice was firm and strong yet laced with a gentleness that mesmerized me. I remember the words she spoke so softly and still wonder if she meant for me to hear them: “There is a reason for every action.”

My fifth grade classmate was giving her no end of grief that day. She had been pushed beyond all limits, yet her conviction rose to meet the challenge. She simply could not, would not give up on helping a child. I observed in silent awe.

I remembered her tonight as I sought the Lord again. Her fond memory returned as I read these precious words: Walking down the street, Jesus saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked, “Rabbi, who sinned: this man or his parents, causing him to be born blind?” Jesus said, “You’re asking the wrong question. You’re looking for someone to blame. There is no such cause-effect here. Look instead for what God can do.” John 9:1-3 The Message

A man blind from birth surely could have wandered down the street without notice. Yet he did not escape the notice of the Savior. The disciples, like many of us, were quick to point a judging finger, seeking the culprit. But Jesus, in tune with the Father’s heart, turned the situation from judgment to loving compassion for both the blind man and His disciples.

Jesus looked beyond the surface. He was not interested in accusing someone of wrong doing. Instead, He used the opportunity to reveal the Father’s heart. He liberated the blind man from his ailment while demonstrating the power and compassion of the living God to His disciples. All the while, Jesus also provided for us an example.

My teacher followed His example on that day. She was not interested in placing blame or even administering the harsh punishment appropriately due. Instead, she met the child with grace, looked deeper, and hoped to find the source of trouble.

Do you ever find life so busy and full of demands that sometimes people seem to be in the way of your progress? Perhaps it seems one difficult person has thrown a wrench in your neatly laid plans. Though, as a Christ follower, may we learn to look beyond the surface, reach to the Father for wisdom, and then demonstrate His grace and power.

I find myself stepping back more and more when faced with a difficult situation. I begin to wonder, what’s going on beneath the outer veneer? What is it that God wants to do here? Does He want to reach a hurting soul through me? Is He hoping to teach me something new? Then I consider how blessed I’ve been that He sent others into my life who have demonstrated the example Jesus gave us. Remember this:

This most generous God who gives seed to the farmer that becomes bread for your meals is more than extravagant with you. He gives you something you can then give away which grows into full-formed lives, robust in God, wealthy in every way, so that you can be generous in every way, producing with us great praise to God. 2 Corinthians 9:11 The Message

Have you had an opportunity to demonstrate the grace of Christ to someone lately? How can you reflect Jesus to someone today? I’d love to hear about it! Feel free to leave a comment ..

“… I want not only to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours: each of us will be a blessing to the other.”
Romans 12:1b The Message Blessings …

Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries - Highpointe

ID - ?

“This is the first time since it was given to me that I do not know where it is. That is very unsettling,” I said with frustration and great concern. It was only a small piece of paper, barely large enough to write on. It had only a few words printed on the surface. I rarely used it. Few people had ever seen it. So what’s the big deal, right? Well, it represented my identity and ability to work.

You see, my Social Security card was misplaced. Though small and seemingly insignificant, this little paper represents much. It validates my citizenship, authorizes that I can work a job, and verifies that I can receive certain government benefits or services. ( “Get a New or Replacement Card.” 31 July 2009 <http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/>)

I was reminded of that dilemma as I read John 1:19-34 today. Jews from Jerusalem were puzzled by John. They wanted to know more about him. John clearly established his identity when asked by the priests and Levites if he was the Christ, Elijah or the Prophet, stating instead that he was a “voice.”

Have you ever had an identify crisis, wondering who am I? Why am I here? What am I supposed to be doing? Or perhaps this has been settled for some time, yet the winding road of life has led you to a new place in which you are uncertain about your role. Again, great comfort and answers can be found in God’s Word:

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10 NIV

“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.”
James 4:17 NIV

Naturally following, I began to question, so how do we know the “good works” that are prepared for us to do? Entire books have been written about how to discover and fulfill our purpose. I am not attempting to answer those questions, but hope rather to stir within you the desire for more – more of God’s Word.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”
Psalm 119:105 NIV

Read it for yourself, study it and practice what you learn. This is where your true identity will be found. The Message translates the words of Jesus plainly:

“These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvement to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on. … if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a dumb carpenter who built a house but skipped the foundation. … a total loss.”
Luke 6:47-49 The Message

We must simply determine to seek Him and act on what He reveals to us. In doing this, we will find ourselves doing “good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

So what happened after John’s identity was known? He knew what God had called him to do and he did it. He boldly stepped up to the challenge and proclaimed the messages given to him. He did the good works God prepared in advance for him to do.

I found it interesting, too, that John testified a second time, the very next day, after his identity had been established. That for which he anxiously waited to see came to him, namely, Jesus. He knew at some point in time this would happen. And finally it did!

And what of my misplaced ID card? The very day my replacement card was received in the mail, my original card was also found! I had asked the Lord to help me find it – and He did! I chuckled at the timing!

Lastly, what of your identity? Have you firmly established yourself in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Do you follow Him, seeking to be like Him? It’s a wonderful adventure to walk into the specific plans, and good works, He has for each of us to do!

Again, I hope you’ll share with me about what God is doing in your life through His Word! But, this week will be a little different – a little on the lighter side of which I hope you will enjoy --- while still illustrating how we can act on what we read. Although this is not noted as a true story, the point just could not be overlooked ...

But Officer

A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding down Main Street.

"But officer," the man said, "I can explain."

"Just be quiet," snapped the officer, "or I’m going to let you cool off in jail until the chief gets back."

The man said, "but officer, I just wanted to say..."

The officer cut him short. "I said KEEP QUIET! You’re going to jail!"

A few hours later, the officer checked up on his prisoner and said, "Lucky for you, the chief is at his daughter’s wedding. He’ll be in a good mood when he gets back."

"Don’t count on it," said the man in the cell..."I’m the groom!"
Source: BCBS Motiva Wellness 07/23/2009

Did you chuckle as I did? Yet how easy it is to press ahead in haste, especially in our fast paced culture. After my giggles stopped, I immediately thought of this:

“He who answers before listening --- that is his folly and his shame.”
Proverbs 18:13 NIV

Much embarrassment and awkwardness will be avoided when we put the Word into practice:

“ … Lead with your ears, follow up with your tongue, and let anger straggle along in the rear. God’s righteousness doesn’t grow from human anger. So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let your gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life.”
James 1:19-21 The Message

I hope you find this as helpful as I did and continue to allow God to work within you. As always, I’d love to hear from you!

“… I want not only to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours: each of us will be a blessing to the other."
Romans 12:1b The Message

Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Lakeside-Highpointe

The words replayed so vividly in my mind. It was as though I were standing across the room watching. Cordial exchanges set a friendly tone. Yet, in this moment of reflection I wanted desperately to hide. How could I have conducted myself in such a manner? What was I thinking? Why did I use that tone and those words? Yet, how gracious my sisters in Christ were to continue warmly with me!

Have you ever looked back on conversations or interactions and wished you could have a “do over?” I sure have! Too many times I’ve realized a little too late that I was questioning my worth, wondering if I brought value in any way, only to later realize I was focused on the wrong thing - me! Stepping back later it’s easy to see how the focus should have been in reaching out to others. How could I meet their need or at least encourage them along their way?

I read a familiar passage this morning …

Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Luke 12:23-24 NIV

I realize this passage addresses that we should not worry about our physical needs, such as food and clothing. But, what of the need for worth and value? It appears this is automatically understood, “And how much more valuable you are than birds!” Why would the God who created all things extend Himself to reach us through His Son, Jesus Christ, if we were of little or no value? Preposterous!

It feels to me as though this is my confession to you … one where I ask your forgiveness for those times when I sought validation instead of purposing to fulfill His design for me. He is faithful to convict us, even when only our thoughts begin to stray, yet lovingly kind enough to get us back on the right track.

Do you need a “do over” or a washing of your mind? Want to just know you are valuable? Or that what you do really matters? Just take a little time to read God’s Word. You’ll begin to see, as I did, how He extends Himself to reach us. Here’s an example:

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. Philippians 4:6-7 The Message

Looks like I’ve got some reading and praying to do … join me? As always, I’d enjoy hearing about how God is making His Word come alive to you. Feel free to leave a comment so others can be encouraged too …

… I want not only to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours: each of us will be a blessing to the other. –Romans 12:1b The Message

Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Lakeside-Highpointe

Ordinary Blessings ...

I could hear in my mind the tumbling of the dryer with that familiar sound of metal meeting metal as the lovely lady sitting across from me described her dilemma. It seems her husband failed to recognize a simple act of fastening the metal clasps on his work overalls would relieve a great annoyance for her.

As our time together continued, she shared about how the Lord changed her perspective. She realized it was her husband’s energy and zest for life that allowed him to continue working. God had restored his health, blessed them with meaningful work and a beautiful home. It was the Lord’s loving kindness to them that even allowed a clanging dryer and tangled garments.

Reflecting on that conversation I was reminded of this:

Know that the Lord is God …
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
His faithfulness continues through all generations.
-Psalm 100:3a, 4-5 NIV

It was a simple task, a routine chore. Yet she learned to act out the Word of God, putting into living color by praising Him for blessings hidden in the ordinary. I found myself considering, “What it is that annoys me? Where do I need to take a step back, view from a different angle, and recognize the blessing rather than the surface?”

We are privileged, even invited to enter the presence of God, the Creator of all things! And how awesome it is that He clearly shows us how to get there:

Enter his gates with THANKSGIVING
And his courts with PRAISE …

You turned my wailing into dancing
You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy
that my heart may sing to you and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever. –Psalm 30:11-2 NIV

My sister learned to enter His presence even while handling laundry! So I wonder, what’s your story? Have you discovered new things for which to be thankful? I’d love for you to share it with me! Why do I ask? Because …

… I want not only to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours: each of us will be a blessing to the other. –Romans 12:1b The Living Bible

Blessings …
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Lakeside-Highpointe

ALL?

My heart raced --- my chest burned --- my lungs could not draw the air in fast enough. The others had passed me long before. But finally, here I stood, relishing the sound of a single click. The click of the stop watch recorded my time and it all came to an end.

In those early days we were required to run a set course. Time measurements were taken as our bodies were pushed to the limit. I gave it my all, yet always finished near the end of the pack. It was frustrating, embarrassing and even discouraging at times. After all these years I still remember those exercises, though today I see this in a different light because of this:

Sitting across from the offering box, he was observing how the crowd tossed money in for the collection. Many of the rich were making large contributions. One poor widow came up and put in two small coins---a measly two cents. Jesus called his disciples over and said, “The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together. All the others gave what they’ll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford---she gave her all.”
Mark 12:41-44 The Message

She gave it her all …

I remember how hard I ran during those exercises. I gave all I had, yet at the end it was as though I were taking a leisurely stroll when compared to the others. Perhaps the widow, too, was embarrassed, frustrated or even discouraged. Yet in her deep devotion to God, she gave her all. She chose to press forward, regardless of how others measured her, regardless of how futile her efforts may have appeared.

And what of our efforts? Are we prompted to do things yet hesitate? Are we giving Christ our all regardless of what He asks of us? Will we look more to our standing among our peers or will we give Him our all, looking to God for His approval? What will He see as the resounding click of the stop watch marks the end of our work?

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might …
Ecclesiastes 9:10 NKJV

Blessings ….
Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Lakeside-Highpointe

It is a dilemma that has puzzled me for years. Many times I have prayed and sought the Lord for an answer. I want this to come into focus, to be clear, so that I know I am responding as He commands. Finally, clarity came today …

The first commandment with promise is this: Honor your father and mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 5:16 / Mark 7:10 NIV

Honor. What does that really mean? I mean, how do you do that? And what if the actions or attitudes of your father or mother are not honorable? How can you honor that which is not honorable? Let’s get real, parents are people, too. They make mistakes, have personalities, strengths and weaknesses, quirks and moods, and face life challenges just like we do. And if you’re a parent like me, you may recognize as I do that sometimes my children could be hard pressed to see me as honorable.

At last, a definition of honor made sense to me today. Honor simply means to value. There may be times when parents, just like each of us, do not act honorably, but, the Christ follower can still fulfill the command to honor them, simply by valuing them. So how does this translate to action? Well, I would ask, what do you do when you value something? Put this same action or attitude into practice where your parents are concerned. Do this in word, in action, in your heart and you will find yourself honoring your father and mother, acting out the Word of God. Then you will be set to receive God’s promise.

Um … how good God is to command us to do what is pleasing to Him and helpful to us! I cannot boast to have always done this correctly. But, I am determined to consciously honor (value) my father and mother. What about you? Have you ever struggled with this as a child or as a parent? Perhaps you have practiced this well and experienced the blessings promised. I’d love to hear about it!

Great promise lies ahead for those who chose to put this Word in living color …

“… so that you may live long and that it may go well with you …”

Blessings …Tanja Dufrene
Women’s Ministries
Lakeside-Highpointe

In Living Color ... 07.02.09

The sun was bright, the breeze warm and water splashed all about me. Ahhh the beauty of summer! As I held on with all my might, the boat pulled us along on "The Monster," an oversized inner tube with handles. Wave after wave we bounced and thrilled, laughing and smiling. As the water sprayed in my face my mascara began to run and burn my eyes. What was I thinking? Why did I wear mascara today? Before long my eyes were closed tight and all my efforts were focused on the firm grip keeping me aboard this wild ride.

The memory of the fun we shared that day returne dto me as I sought the Lord this morning becuase His Word says:
God's eye is on those who respect him ... Psalm 33:18 The Message
God keeps an eye on his friends* ... Psalm 34:15a The Message

That day my eyes were closed, no lnoger useful in helping me see waht was coming next. Yet I'm reminded that God doe snot close His eyes, instead He is ever watching me, looking out for me, knowing what is yet ahead. But, how can I know I am His friend*? Jesus tells us plainly ...

You are my friends when you do the things I command you. John 15:15 The Message

Are you listening for His commands, obeying with anticipation? His eye is every on you --- and me! What a comfort! What a joy --- knowing that He who created our world has not forgotten us and does not close His eye to where we are. He calls us His friend.
